About VIT

Founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College, the institute was declared a University in recognition of its academic excellence by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India in 2001. The University has since grown by leaps and bounds – establishing excellent infrastructure replete with state-of-the-art laboratories, digital library, smart class rooms seventeen hostels, gyms, swimming pools, auditoria and stadium spread over an impeccacably clean and green 250 acre campus - on way to fulfill the vision of the founder and Chancellor Dr. G. Viswanathan to make it truly world class. VIT today comprises of six constituent Schools and interdisciplinary Centers offering undergraduate, graduate, post graduate and research programs upto PhD level. Of the 14,000 students, largely residential, nearly one fourth are women. Some 700 qualified faculty members and about 600 administrative and supporting staff facilitate the process of making them not only professionals but also industry ready, contributing wealth to the nation. Located on the Ranipet - Katpadi highway it is 130 kms West of Chennai and 205 kms East of Bangalore. The strategic location of the University adds value to the education by constant interaction with nearby industries. VIT has organized a number of International and National conferences in the recent past utilizing its awe-inspiring facilities. (www.vit.ac.in) . VIT is the first educational institution of India to get ISO 9002 certificate by the DNV of The Netherlands.

It is again the first Institute in India to get accreditation from IEE (UK). Further it has also been accredited by NBA (AICTE) and NAAC (UGC). VIT has signed 69 MoUs with Institutions within India and from countries like Australia, Canada, France, Germany, UK and USA in various disciplines towards exchange of faculty and students, joint programs involving courses as well as research and improvement of laboratory and library facilities,. In the last seven years, VIT had more than 100 visiting professors, some of them staying 6 to 12 weeks for offering accelerated courses as well as participating in Workshops and Seminars for the benefit of students of VIT and also the industry around.
